Nicky Gough, Superstar!
30 April 2009
Breaking news is that our award winning hygienist, Nicky Gough, not only passed her first year of Primary Dental Care, at Kent University, with merit, but she finished top of her class! If you consider that she also is a wife and mother of 2 children, helps her husband Steve in his business and works here at Cornerways, this can only be regarded as a mammoth achievement. Well done!
Invisalign now available at Cornerways
14 October 2008
We are very pleased and excited to announce that Marco Carugati is now certified to offer the full Invisalign system of Orthodontic therapy. Invisalign is an ingenious way of straightening teeth by means of a series of computer generated aligners. These aligners look like clear mouth-guards and therefore invisible to the casual observer, unlike the very visible “rail tracks” used in Orthodontics before. Not every case is suitable for Invisalign and therefore each individual case needs to be carefully assessed by Marco.

New Consulting Area
01 September 2008
At the beginning of August, we started the renovation process to incorporate the unused office next to the downstairs surgery as an integral consulting room. The wall between the two rooms has been knocked through, the old carpet removed and another computer has been added to the new room.
This is to allow the dentists to discuss treatments with patients away from the clinical areas and in far less intimidating circumstances.
A new folding/sliding door is planned to replace the existing French doors and the newly exposed parquet flooring still needs to be re-done.
Continuing Professional Development
23 May 2008
In keeping to our commitment to maintain our high standards of excellence and following requirements of the General Dental Council, the Cornerways team members have been busy with various CPD courses during the past few weeks.
On the 12 May 2008, Brian, Nicky and Linda attended one of the Talking Points in Dentistry series of talks in Southampton. These are sponsored by Glaxo Smith Kline and are organised by Stockport Dental Seminars under the guidance of Roy Higson. These are aimed at the dental team and usually cover some clinical topics as well as general practice topics. This year Malcolm Levenkind spoke about pediatric dentistry and points to look out for in childrens’ development which can affect the developing and newly erupting teeth. Raj Rattan then spoke about marketing and branding aspects of a dental practice and how patients’ perceptions of a practice can be very different to ours.
Then on 13 May, Brian, Jenny, Nicky, Linda and Maggie had a Heartguard representative give us a presentation and demonstrations on current protocols in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. It would appear that these protocols change continuously and therefore it is vital for us to keep updating our knowledge on a regular basis.
Linda attended a appointed person’s course in First Aid on Sunday 18 May 2008. Linda is Cornerways’ appointed first aider. She also attended a course in Oral Surgery on 21 may 2008 at the Wessex Dental Centre in Hampshire. This along with the course she did in Bone Regeneration at the same centre on 11 March 2008, and working with Hennie, she now is well versed in a wide spectrum of topics to do with the surgical side of dentistry.
Brian attended a one day course at the Royal College of Physicians in London on 19 May 2008 called Functional Occlusion, given by eminent speaker John Kois from Seattle. Washington, USA. He was certainly an excellent speaker and presented his systematic approach to the “chewing machine” very well. Implementation of his approach will allow for better diagnosis and treatment of patients requiring occlusal intervention here at Cornerways.
Nikon D40X Digital Camera
02 April 2008
We have now added a Nikon D40X 10 megapixel digital camera to our growing list of innovative dental equipment. This camera is fitted with a sophisticated Nikon macro lens and a TTL ring flash.
This camera will be used primarily in aesthetic and orthodontic cases so that we have before and after reference pictures.
This tool is also very useful in such cases because pictures can be sent via e mail to our laboratory so that they can then match up tooth shades and anatomy harmoniously to adjacent teeth and to the patients’ faces.
This along with our existing intra-oral camera will also provide far more information to our patients allowing them to make more informed decisions about their own treatments.
Durr Digital X Ray System
01 March 2008
In keeping with our ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality dentistry, we’ve recently taken delivery of a Durr Dental VistaScan Plus Digital X Ray unit. The Vistascan Plus is able to process both intra oral and extra oral X rays digitally.
The advantages of such a system are numerous:
-Reduced X ray exposure dose means greater safety for patients.
-Software manipulation of images allow for far greater accuracy in diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
-More environmentally friendly because of reduction of waste products associated with the film and developing system.
An upgrade to our X ray system was way overdue but is now an indispensable and very welcome addition to the practice.
